What is RCI registration for special educators?
RCI registration is entry on the Central Rehabilitation Register kept by the Rehabilitation Council of India. Under the RCI Act 1992, people who work as rehabilitation professionals, including special educators, need a recognised qualification and registration. You apply after completing an RCI-recognised course such as a D.Ed or B.Ed Special Education, and you must keep registration current.
What this means in practice
Registration protects children by ensuring that people presenting themselves as special educators have completed approved training. Many government posts, Samagra Shiksha roles and reputable schools ask for a registration number at interview.
Who needs it
Anyone working as a special educator, rehabilitation psychologist, audiologist, speech therapist or other rehabilitation professional listed by RCI. Shadow teachers, assistants and parents who have not completed an RCI course are not eligible, and their roles generally do not require it.
How it works
- Complete a course recognised by RCI at an approved institution.
- Apply on RCI's portal with your certificates and fee.
- Receive a registration number on the Central Rehabilitation Register.
- Renew as required and meet RCI's continuing education rules.
Practical next steps
- Check that your institution and course appear on RCI's current lists.
- Keep copies of marksheets and certificates.
- Apply promptly after results.
- Note your renewal date and continuing education requirements.
What to keep in mind
APTTI's online courses are professional development and are not RCI-recognised. They do not make anyone eligible for RCI registration.
Common follow-up questions
Can I practise as a special educator without RCI registration?
Presenting yourself as a special educator without registration can breach the RCI Act. Work in support roles instead and pursue a recognised course.
Does RCI register online course graduates?
Only graduates of courses RCI recognises, which include some open and distance learning programmes listed on its website.
