What is the difference between D.Ed and B.Ed Special Education?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

A D.Ed Special Education is a two-year RCI-recognised diploma taken after 10+2, preparing teachers mainly for pre-primary and primary levels. A B.Ed Special Education is a two-year degree taken after graduation, preparing teachers for school levels and leading to wider roles and higher pay. Both lead to RCI registration and are offered in specific disability areas.

What this means in practice

Choosing between them depends on your current qualification and goals. If you have completed 12th but not a degree, the D.Ed is the main route. If you already hold a degree, the B.Ed gives a higher qualification and opens more posts.

Side by side

  • Entry: D.Ed after 10+2 (usually 50% marks); B.Ed after a bachelor's degree.
  • Duration: both usually two years.
  • Level: D.Ed focuses on early and primary stages; B.Ed covers school education more broadly.
  • Specialisations: intellectual disability, hearing impairment, visual impairment, autism, learning disability, multiple disabilities and others.
  • Recognition: both lead to RCI registration when the institution and course are RCI-recognised.

What about online certificates?

Short online courses help you understand the field before committing two years, or support you in a current role. They do not replace a D.Ed or B.Ed for registered posts.

Practical next steps

  1. Check your eligibility for each route.
  2. Choose a specialisation.
  3. Shortlist RCI-recognised institutions near you.
  4. Compare fees, practicum arrangements and admission dates.
ExampleArjun has a BA and wants to teach children who are deaf. He chooses a B.Ed Special Education (hearing impairment) and learns Indian Sign Language alongside it.

What to keep in mind

Admission procedures and eligibility can change each year. Confirm details with RCI and the institution.

Common follow-up questions

Can I do a B.Ed Special Education after a D.Ed?

Yes, once you also hold a bachelor's degree; some universities give credit for prior training.

Is B.Ed Special Education available by distance learning?

Some RCI-recognised open universities offer it; check RCI's current list before enrolling.
