What is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) who delivers applied behavior analysis services under close supervision of a certified behavior analyst. To qualify you must be at least 18, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, complete 40 hours of training, pass a competency assessment and background checks, and pass the RBT exam.
What this means in practice
RBTs often work with autistic children in homes, clinics and schools, implementing skill-building and behavior plans written by a BCBA. In US schools, some one-to-one aides are RBTs, especially in autism programs.
Requirements in brief
- Age 18 or older with a high school education or equivalent.
- Completion of a 40-hour RBT training course based on the BACB task list.
- An initial competency assessment, completed by an employer since January 2024.
- Criminal background and abuse registry checks.
- Passing the RBT certification exam.
- Ongoing supervision by a BCBA or BCaBA.
Where it is available
According to training providers, since January 2023 the BACB accepts applications only from people living in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. Teachers in India, the Gulf, Asia and Africa cannot apply for RBT certification under that rule.
RBT training versus a special education course
RBT training focuses narrowly on ABA techniques under supervision. A special education course covers a wider range: different disabilities, IEPs, inclusion, communication and working with families. Many professionals benefit from both.
Practical next steps
- Confirm you live in an eligible country.
- Complete a 40-hour training course.
- Arrange a competency assessment with an employer or supervisor.
- Apply to the BACB and pass the exam.
- Maintain supervision and renew annually.
What to keep in mind
Check the BACB's current requirements directly, as eligibility and rules change. APTTI's courses are not RBT training and do not lead to BACB certification.
Common follow-up questions
Can I become an RBT in India or the UAE?
Under the BACB's 2023 rule, only residents of the US, Canada, Australia and the UK may apply.
Is an RBT a teacher?
No; RBTs deliver behavior-analytic services under supervision and are not licensed teachers.
