What is the Rehabilitation Council of India?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, set up under the RCI Act 1992. It regulates training programmes for rehabilitation and special education professionals, recognises courses and institutions, and maintains the Central Rehabilitation Register of qualified professionals such as special educators, audiologists and rehabilitation psychologists.

What this means in practice

RCI's role ensures that people working with persons with disabilities in professional capacities have recognised training. It also conducts admission tests for some programmes and sets continuing education requirements.

What RCI does

  • Recognises courses and institutions in rehabilitation and special education.
  • Maintains the Central Rehabilitation Register.
  • Sets standards for training.
  • Promotes continuing rehabilitation education.
  • Conducts admission processes for some diploma programmes.

Why it matters to you

If you want to work as a special educator or rehabilitation professional, choose an RCI-recognised course and register after qualifying.

How to check RCI recognition

On the RCI website, check the list of recognised institutions and courses for the relevant academic year, including the specific disability area. Confirm the institution's approval status for your batch, not just in previous years. After qualifying, apply for registration on RCI's portal. Ask the institution about practicum arrangements and RCI exam requirements before you enrol.

If you are unsure whether a course or institution is recognised, contact RCI directly before paying fees.

Practical next steps

  1. Visit RCI's official website.
  2. Check recognised courses and institutions.
  3. Understand registration rules.
  4. Plan your qualification path.
ExampleBefore paying fees, Raghav checks RCI's recognised list and discovers that the college he was considering lacks recognition for the specialisation he wanted.

What to keep in mind

Online short courses, including APTTI's, are not RCI-recognised.
