What is positive behaviour support?
Positive behaviour support (PBS) is an approach that improves behaviour by understanding why it happens and changing the environment, teaching new skills and reinforcing positive behaviour, rather than relying on punishment. It focuses on the child's quality of life and dignity. Schools use it for whole classes and for individual children with challenging behaviour.
What this means in practice
All behaviour communicates something, such as a need for attention, escape from a hard task or sensory comfort. PBS asks what the behaviour achieves for the child and teaches a better way to meet that need.
Core elements
- Understand the function of the behaviour.
- Prevent problems by adjusting the environment and tasks.
- Teach replacement skills, such as asking for a break.
- Reinforce desired behaviour consistently.
- Respond calmly and safely to incidents.
- Review data and adjust.
School-wide PBS
Schools set a few clear expectations, teach them, acknowledge positive behaviour and use data to identify children who need more support.
PBS in Indian schools
The RTE Act 2009 prohibits physical punishment and mental harassment, so schools need effective alternatives. Positive behaviour support gives teachers a structured way to manage behaviour without punishment. Many schools start with three to five clear expectations displayed in every room, regular acknowledgement of good behaviour, and a simple form to record incidents. Recording helps identify the small number of children who need individual plans, often with input from a special educator or counsellor.
Practical next steps
- Define the behaviour clearly.
- Record what happens before and after.
- Identify its likely purpose.
- Teach and reward a replacement behaviour.
What to keep in mind
PBS requires consistency across adults. Agree the plan with all staff and the family.
Common follow-up questions
Is PBS the same as rewarding bad behaviour?
No. It rewards replacement behaviour and removes triggers.
Does PBS work for children without disabilities?
Yes. School-wide PBS supports all students.
