What is global developmental delay?
Global developmental delay describes a young child, usually under five, who is significantly behind in two or more areas of development, such as movement, speech and language, thinking and learning, or social and daily-living skills. It is a description, not a final diagnosis. Some children catch up with support, while others are later identified with a specific condition.
What this means in practice
The term is used when a child is too young for reliable testing of intellectual ability. Early intervention, such as therapy and structured play, can support development during the early years.
Signs to notice
- Not sitting, standing or walking at expected ages.
- Few words or gestures compared with peers.
- Difficulty with play, problem-solving or copying actions.
- Delays in feeding, dressing or toilet training.
Support in India
RBSK screens for developmental delays, and District Early Intervention Centres offer multidisciplinary assessment and therapy. NIEPID and other national institutes also provide early intervention services.
What happens next
Children are usually reviewed over time. Some catch up in some areas, while others are later diagnosed with a specific condition. Continued support matters either way.
Keep a record of progress to share at reviews.
Practical next steps
- Track development with a milestone checklist.
- Share concerns with the family.
- Encourage early medical review.
- Support play-based learning at school.
What to keep in mind
Early intervention is most effective when started early; do not wait to see if a child grows out of significant delays.
Common follow-up questions
Can a child with global developmental delay catch up?
Some do, especially with early support; others will need ongoing help.
Is global developmental delay the same as intellectual disability?
Not necessarily. It describes delay in young children; intellectual disability is diagnosed later through assessment.
